Call Of Duty Games: Alley Vs Island
Is there something wrong with Call of Duty games? Not much. But there is a but. And when there is a but there is something wrong. The way I see it MW3 is way too short. You can be done it in around 20 hours, probably less.
Take Skyrim into account. It is essentially an FPS game combined with RPG. Now it is likely that it will take you about 200 hours to go through just the main quest line, side lines not included.
And because of its Creation engine, which has a very advanced AI that gives randomness like real life to NPCs, and its free roaming capability, you will have thousands of hours of game-play waiting for you.
Lets say the player in Skyrim wants to stay away from the main quest line. This is easily done. There is always something to do no matter where you go in the game.
The truth? Call of Duty games are getting shorter and shorter. The success of Modern Warfare has made the developers to think less about the player and more about the money. I ask the question: is Modern Warfare 3 really that different from MW 2?
The makers of Skyrim have put out a truly innovative game building upon its predecessor: Oblivion. So why haven't they done this for MW3? I know why.
You can break down games into two categories. One is an alley game, the other is an Island game. Call of Duty games are alley games. The boundaries in alley games are close, very close. In this case the player is led down a certain constrained path.
Most RPG games are Island games, this is where the boundaries are not immediately perceptible. It will take you a long time to walk from one bounder to the other, and bounders are natural in nature usually a mountain.
What’s my point? Games like Modern Warfare would be made like Island games that would be way more interesting, maybe a little less exciting, but would increase play time. I know that Call of Duty is all about multi-player, and or survival mode, and in that is were the hours of play time can be found.
Making an FPS like this would give the player the power to determine the way the game will evolve. Call it a cross-genre fps. Military games that have huge expanses usually are more strategy games, like Flashpoint. Expanding the boundaries would be great for FPS, and it doesn't have to be RPG, but imagine been able to expand and build on your combat skills to become a super solider?
But wait, do not read this the wrong way. I know that alley style games heighten the drama of the game play, and I love MW 2 and 3. I think they are the best FPS games out there. Before we have to fork out another 70 dollars, I just think it is time to start thinking outside the box for once.
In the end I prefer to play Skyrim, as its combat mode is still FPS. I would suggest you do get the Call of Duty games, and make sure you get Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and 3. They are a lot of fun
