How To Drag Yourself Away From The Telly
Do you realize how much TV you are watching every single day? If you think there are only 24 hours in an entire day then a report by the Nielsen Company which suggests the average US citizen watches about 34 hours of TV per week is shocking. That is just an average though, so not everyone watches that amount, but it is still shocking to see just how much of our time we spend watching CSI and other shows.
Watching TV used to be a family activity as televisions used to be expensive and extremely bulky, but since the launch of LCD TVs then suddenly TVs have appeared in most rooms of the house and that has helped to drive up viewing figures dramatically. No longer do kids have to put up with what their parents are watching in the living room, instead they all have their own TVs and can watch whatever they like. TVs are getting bigger too, no longer will a tiny 32 inch TV do as your main one, or even a 42 inch one. Instead people are going for ones that are 55 inches big, or even the monster 60 inch sets which I have seen a few of.
Unfortunately if you watch a lot of TV then that is stopping you from doing things which will get you active and help you to burn calories. People also like to eat while they watch TV, so I think our viewing habits are a big cause for the rise in obesity that we are seeing right now. But what kind of interesting things can you do instead of watching your favorite shows?
One of the best things you can do which will be a lot of fun is to try out a new hobby. There are so many different hobbies you can try that there is something for everyone, and even if they don't get you physically active then at least they get you mentally active. However even something like stamp collecting will be more rewarding than watching endless repeats of Friends on TV. A lot of people right now will be using the excuse that they don't have enough time to take up a new hobby and get any good at it, but if you have enough time to watch 5 hours of TV per day then you have enough free time for this. With that kind of time free each week then the world is your oyster and you could do anything from learning to speak a foreign language to even learning an instrument you have always wanted to.
Or if you don't fancy any of that then you could go back to college. By using some of that new free time you have then you could take some courses and get some better qualifications and start a totally new career or just improve your prospects in your current one. If you hate the idea of actually attending classes then you can't use that as an excuse to get out of it, you can do courses through distance learning now instead. There are two great ideas there to not only give you more interesting things to do, but to increase your knowledge and skills in different areas and maybe even increase your career prospects, so turn off the TV and start living!
