Sports Vs Romance: Video Games Vs Movies

Video games vs movies, is this valid? Of course we do not have to discuss that the video game industry has taken a big part of the movie industry revenue. As video games become more and more like movies the more competition Hollywood will be facing. Will the sliver screen era come to an end now?

Is Hollywood doomed? What do you like more? If it was video games vs movies, which one would you choose? The cool thing about great video games like Call Of Duty Modern Warfare is the fact that you feel like a Hollywood hero saving the world from evil. Video games put you in the story itself, a story that you are in control of. Its hard for me to not get sucked into the feeling of power and excitement that a video game gives me?

The dilemma for the movie industry is that a lot of games gives the player hours if not hundreds of hours of game play. So when do the gamers have time to go to a movie?

But all is not lost for the movies. When movies came out way back, people thought that would be the end of reading. Again, when TV came out, guess what, people thought that would be the end of the silver screen, over sixty years ago. People thought when video games hit the shelves say goodbye to TV.

The Apocalypse never happened. why is this? The more people have the more people want, that's how simple it is. This is the theory behind shopping centers: developers try and cram in as many stores as possible into one location, and even if another center opens in the same area, that's great too! Having more stores means more costumers.

It boils down to this: video games vs movies, is an impossible comparison because they are two different things. One is a passive experience, the other is an active experience.

I think doing one or the other is dependent on your mood, or time of day. I don't like being active all of the time. A video game is an active concentrated effort that gets the blood rushing, and is like partaking in sports. Sometimes I want to passively be entertained, I want to romantically watch a movie with my wife, this is the role of a movie. What does a video game offer, active participation where I can be a winner, a hero.

So what is the problem? Getting people into the theaters. How do they do this? By creating gimmicks like real 3D, or combining the film concept with a video game release. Will video games kill the movie industry? No. But less cinemas might be built with more and more people will not leave the comfort of our home because of VOD. In my opinion one of the best movie style video games of all time is the great game: Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2
